Service Description

Beyond the Mug is a six-week handbuilding intensive for Winnipeg makers interested in developing a more personal relationship with form, surface, and storytelling through clay. Using the familiar mug or cup as our starting point, we'll move beyond basic construction techniques to explore how texture, carving, layering, and glaze can transform a functional object into something expressive and deeply individual. Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and one-on-one feedback, students will investigate how surface can hold memory, movement, narrative, and place. This is not a production pottery class. Instead, we'll focus on slowing down, developing intention, and creating work that reflects your own visual language. You'll learn slab-building techniques, approaches to sculptural form, carving, and methods for layering glazes to create rich, dimensional surfaces. Whether you're interested in functional pottery, sculptural ceramics, or finding a stronger artistic voice in your work, this course offers space to experiment, take risks, and push beyond conventional mug-making. Students will leave with a small collection of four finished ceramic pieces and a deeper understanding of how surface and story can transform everyday objects.
